Instructions for Use
Well over half of all hunting rifles have an oiled stock. During manufacturing, this is typically pre-treated with stock oil. However, this does not provide permanent protection.
All wood – including stock wood – is hygroscopic. It absorbs water and, when used in daily hunting practice, is exposed to wind, weather, and constant temperature fluctuations. This makes the stock vulnerable. Moisture can penetrate, and as it dries out, it can cause the stock to warp or even crack. The result: the point of impact is no longer accurate, and the firearm's shooting performance is impaired. This can become costly – and even dangerous.
That's why every oiled stock needs regular care with a gunstock oil. SCHAFTOL® is excellently suited for this purpose, as it is a top-quality specialty stock oil.
SCHAFTOL® preserves the rifle stock optimally and protects it from weathering of any kind, particularly against roughening and staining. The stock becomes darker and more attractive the more often the treatment with SCHAFTOL® is repeated. Even a small amount is enough to achieve the desired effect and bring out the beautiful, natural grain.
Here's how to proceed:
- Pre-sand the stock with approx. grit 240–280.
- Apply the oil generously using the application sponge. Alternatively, you can dip the stock.
- Let the oil soak in at room temperature for about 5 days.
- Lightly sand the stock again, this time with grit 400. Remove only a small amount of wood. This sanding step smooths the wood fibers that have been raised by the oiling.
- Oil again. The stock will now absorb less oil.
- Let the oil soak in at room temperature for about 3–5 days.
- Now sand in between with very fine sandpaper (grit 1000–1500). The finer you sand, the stronger the shine will be later.
- Support the final oil application with a soft cotton cloth. Rub/press the oil into the pores.
- Repeat the oil application (step 8) with a cloth as many times as needed until the desired result is achieved.
If you are treating a raw wooden stock with SCHAFTOL® for the first time, you should warm the SCHAFTOL® beforehand to 30–50 °C to achieve deeper penetration of the oil into the stock. To do this, transfer the required amount into a separate container and warm it in a water bath. The original bottle with the application sponge is not suitable for heating.
Tip: Take the time to always polish and work in the oil by hand. Polishing machines work too roughly and imprecisely to achieve good results. In the worst case, the stock could even be damaged.
