SCHAFTOL®, the well-tried quality product for stock care, is available from specialist gun dealers in a wide range of products:

  • Gold: to emphasise the grain of light stocks and to achieve a golden-yellow finish.
  • Light: for light stocks that should not darken
  • Red-brown: for stocks with a reddish-brown colour
  • Dark: for walnut stocks
  • Extra-dark: for especially dark stocks; also very suitable for re-dyeing stocks when repairing stocks

SCHAFTOL® instructions for use

All types of wood, including gunstock wood, are hygroscopic. It absorbs water and is exposed to wind, weather and constant temperature fluctuations during daily hunting use. This makes the stock susceptible. Moisture can penetrate the stock, which can warp or even crack when it dries. The result: the point of impact is no longer accurate, and the shooting performance of the weapon is impaired. This can be expensive, but also dangerous.

Therefore, every oiled stock needs regular care with a gun stock oil. SCHAFTOL® is excellently suited for this purpose, because it is a special stock oil of the highest quality. It consists exclusively of the finest natural products.

SCHAFTOL® provides the best possible preservation for the rifle stock, protecting it against all kinds of weather, especially against roughening and staining. The stock will become darker and more beautiful the more it is treated with SCHAFTOL®. Just a small amount is needed to achieve the desired effect and to emphasise the beautiful, natural grain.

And this is how to proceed:

Well over half of all hunting rifles have an oiled stock. During manufacture, the stock is usually pre-treated with stock oil. However, this is not a permanent protection.

  1. Sand the stock with approx. grit 240-280.
  2. Apply a liberal amount of oil with the application sponge. Alternatively, you can dip the stock.
  3. Allow the oil to soak in at room temperature for about 5 days.
  4. Lightly sand the stock again. This time with grit 400. Remove a little wood. This sanding serves to smooth the wood fibres that have stood up due to the oiling.
  5. Re-oil. The shaft will now absorb less oil.
  6. Allow the oil to soak in at room temperature for about 3-5 days.
  7. Now you should do some intermediate sanding with very fine sandpaper (1000-1500 grit). The finer you sand, the higher the gloss will be later.
  8. The last oil application should be supported with a soft cotton cloth. Rub/press the oil into the pores.
  9. Repeat the oil application (point 8) with a cloth until the desired result is achieved.

If you are treating the raw wooden stock with SCHAFTOL® for the first time, you should heat SCHAFTOL® to 30 to 50 degrees beforehand to achieve deeper penetration of the oil into the stock. To do this, transfer the required amount and heat it in a water bath. The original bottle with application sponge is not suitable for heating.

Tip: You should always take the time to polish and work in the oil by hand. Polishing machines work too roughly and inaccurately to achieve good results. In the worst case, the shaft can even be damaged.

SCHAFTOL® That's why it's the original

SCHAFTOL® comes from the ‘Jagd- und Sportwaffenfirma Scherell & Co.’ (Scherell & Co. Hunting and Sporting Arms Company), which was founded in 1834. It was developed by Oswald Scherell, a leading Prussian master gunsmith.
